Electric Range Tips

Care to share?

Welcome to the local appliance parts, appliance repair and maintenance tips website!  You have come to the right place for tips and information on Stove Repair and Maintenance.  A handy DIY homeowner can use this information to keep their electric range working like new.  This information applies to most makes and models of electric ranges including Amana, Bosch, Crosley, Electrolux, Frigidaire, GE, Hotpoint, Jenn Air, Kenmore, Magic Chef, Westinghouse, Whirlpool and more.

Most electric ranges are similarly designed with elements on a cooktop and inside the oven that heat up when electricity flows through them.  The cooktop will have 4 to 6 burners.  The three most common types of elements are coil elements, Euro burners and the radiant element.  All are controlled by a surface burner switch which can be set at variable settings from low (simmer) to high (boil).

Coil elements are the most common and economical of the three, made from an alloy of nickel and chrome.  When the element heats up it glows red hot.  They usually plug into receptacles which allow for easy removal for cleaning.

Euro burners are solid and smooth.  They heat with electricity but do not glow red.

The radiant element is covered by a glass or ceramic top.  Use care with type of burner and cook with pans that are specifically designed for ceramic cook tops to avoid damage to the elements.

There are two types of elements in the oven:  one on top for broiling and one on the bottom for baking.  The thermostat controls the temperature and the selector switch determines the function, bake, broil, self-clean and timed-bake.

Maintenance Tips for Electric Ranges:

Home appliances last longer and perform better when properly maintained.  Be sure to unplug the unit before beginning service.

Use non-abrasive cleaners for the exterior of the stove.  Add ammonia to warm, soapy water to cut grease.

Follow directions in the owner’s manual for self-cleaning ovens.

Replace drip pans every couple years if they are permanently stained to keep the stove looking new.

Clean up spills immediately to prevent them from becoming cooked-on and more difficult to clean.

Many parts on electric stoves are easy to replace; simply unplug the old part and plug in a new one.
